Trip to South Africa with a little child. (Naar Zuid Afrika met een klein kind)

The uncle of my husband grounded and the cousin is running this great foundation. I was watching this video with tears in my eyes

http://www.stichtingleeuw.nl/en Great place to visit with kids in North Holland!

The foundation has a large big cat rescue facility in a rural part of the The Netherlands. The facility is housed on the Hoenderdaell Estate, near the town of Anna Paulowna.

The Flight
Our journey began on January 26, 2009 at the Düsseldorf International Airport. Our first flight was to Paris and from there we flew to Johannesburg.
Car Rent
In Johannesburg we rented a car with a navigation system and a child seat, the accessories which are very important when travelling all the way through the country with a 2 years old child.

Phone
To save money on phone calls and always have good connection we purchased a mobile SIM-card at the local Vodafone shop at the airport.
Travel Guide
As we did not book any tour and were choosing our destinations spontaneously we had our usual guide with us – the Lonely Planet Travel Guide.

Accomodations in South Africa

The accommodation for the first 2 nights in Harrismith we booked online from The Netherlands just to have a starting point and time to get the first impression of the country and decide where to go.

It was a good idea to take a child travel bed with us because not every accommodation had a child bed available. We had a baby phone in our equipment as well, it gave us a possibility to sometimes have a romantic dinner or a glass of wine at the hotel restaurant or outside when our daughter was already asleep. However, next time we will make sure that our baby phone coverage is more than 50 meters as it can force you to sit between the hotel room and the restaurant :)
In Harrismith we had a nice clean room with a small kitchen and a bathroom.

Health Care in South Africa (Gezondheidszorg in Zuid Afrika)

The lady who owns the accommodation was very nice and helpful especially when me and my daughter got sick the very first night of the vacation. It appeared to be a flu virus we took with us from home. From this lady we got a phone number of a local physician and called him for an appointment
Luckily, unlike in The Netherlands we had an appointment for the same day. The procedure was very simple, we just had to fill in a form and I got a quick help from the doctor: an injection and a receipt for antibiotics . By the way, he told us always to make sure that a doctor in South Africa uses a disposable syringe.
Because our daughter seemed to be better he did not prescribe her any medicines and that was a mistake. Next day we had to stop at a medical clinic in another town and visit a pediatrician, it appeared to be an ear inflammation. He prescribed her fluid antibiotics which had to be held cool…in the car with 30 degrees outside…So we bought a cooling bag and stopped once in a while to fill it with crushed ice…We were going further South...

Addo Elephant Park

Great experience! Rent a bungalow in the heart of the park and you'll be a part of it!
